Imports recommended if egg price exceeds Tk150 per dozen
The commission also suggested granting customs and tax exemptions on such imports
The Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission has recommended that the Ministry of Commerce allow imports if the retail price of a dozen eggs exceeds Tk150.
Currently, the price of a dozen eggs in the market stands at around Tk140.
The commission also suggested granting customs and tax exemptions on such imports.
Similarly, the commission proposed allowing onion imports with duty waivers if the price climbs above Tk90 per kilogram.
Onion is currently being sold for Tk70-80 per kg in Dhaka markets.
On green chilies, the commission recommended withdrawing the existing 20% supplementary duty until 30 September to keep supply stable.
It also urged applying actual exchange rate duty instead of the dutiable price at import.
Green chilies now retail for Tk220-260 per kg.
The commission noted that onion production stood at 4.45 million tonnes in FY2024-25 and said import liberalisation has already helped stabilise prices.
It also asked the National Consumer Rights Protection Department to strengthen supply chain monitoring, from production to retail, to ensure stable vegetable prices.
