UIU holds 8th convocation, awards degrees to 1,736 students
The 8th Convocation of United International University (UIU) took place on 27 December 2025 at the university's campus in United City, Madani Avenue, Dhaka.
Professor Dr Abu Borhan Mohammad Badruzzaman, Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), presided over the ceremony on behalf of the President and Chancellor of UIU. Professor Dr Mohammad Anwar Hossen, Member of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, attended as the special guest of the convocation.
The convocation speaker was Professor Dr M Taher A Saif, Grainger Distinguished Chair in Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, USA. The ceremony was also addressed by Hasan Mahmood Raja, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of UIU, and Professor Dr Md Abul Kashem Mia, Vice-Chancellor of UIU.
In his address, Professor Dr Abu Borhan Mohammad Badruzzaman said innovation must be advanced and sustainable through scalable solutions. He urged students to transition from labour-intensive to knowledge-intensive education and called on graduates to contribute to social change, economic development, and modernisation while establishing themselves as global citizens.
A total of 1,736 students from various disciplines were awarded undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, while four outstanding students received gold medals for academic excellence.
As the special guest, Professor Dr Mohammad Anwar Hossen said the knowledge and skills acquired at the university were not only for personal advancement but also for the collective development of society.
Convocation speaker Professor Dr M Taher A Saif congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to work sincerely for the welfare of humanity. Hasan Mahmood Raja expressed confidence that UIU graduates would bring pride to their families and the wider community through their professional achievements.
In his speech, Professor Dr Md Abul Kashem Mia called on graduates to be good human beings and dedicate themselves to the welfare of society and humanity.
Vice-chancellors from various universities, members of the UIU Board of Trustees, deans, heads of departments, academic staff, administrative officials, educationists, and journalists attended the convocation.
