Tree plantation drive aims to cut pollution, beautify city

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Shahjahan Mia has inaugurated a tree plantation and greening programme covering 33 road medians, spanning a total length of 31 kilometres, within the corporation's jurisdiction.
Under the "Zero Soil" programme, ornamental flowering trees and grasses will be planted across 28 DSCC medians, while the Forest Department will cover five medians in two phases. In total, 10,645 ornamental flower saplings — including Radhachura, Bougainvillaea, Tagar, Sheuli, Karbi, Cherry, Bakul, Sonalu, Tecoma, Jarul, and Musenda — will be planted. Furthermore, 81,100 mini Tagar, Rang Cheeta, and mini Rangana plants will be used as hedges or borders on both sides of the road medians. Bermuda grass, lawn grass, ivy vine, and Adelia will also be planted to green the entire stretch.
The DSCC Administrator inaugurated and inspected the plantation at medians on Mirpur Road, Abdul Gani Road, Shaheed Captain Mansur Ali Sarani, City College via Border Square, and Shaheed Farhan Fayyaz Road, among the 13 medians being developed in the first phase.
"As part of the city's beautification and efforts to control environmental pollution, tree planting and greening are being carried out on road medians under DSCC," said Shahjahan Mia. He added that DSCC is collaborating with the Department of Forest on this initiative. The programme is being conducted under the guidance of advisers to the Ministries of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, and Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md Zahirul Islam, Secretary Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md Mahabubur Rahman Talukder, and other senior officials attended the inauguration ceremony.
