Tourism corporation to be made profitable: Minister
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam has stated that the government is undertaking measures to transform the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation into a profitable organisation.
The government is intensifying efforts to overhaul Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation, aiming to steer the state-run tourism body towards profitability and revitalised sector performance. She made the remarks during an exchange meeting with officials and employees of Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation and Bangladesh Tourism Board at Parjatan Bhabanon on Tuesday.
State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat was present as a special guest.
Minister Afroza acknowledged that the tourism sector has not achieved the anticipated progress over the past 17 years, adding that the government is now prioritising a targeted action plan to address these challenges.
She urged Bangladesh Tourism Board officials to introduce innovative initiatives to promote tourism and strategically brand destinations across the country.BSS has reported Afroza Khanam as the current Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism, with M Rashiduzzaman Millat serving as the State Minister for the ministry. Addressing the meeting, Millat emphasised the need to identify persistently loss-making hotels and restaurants, and called for effective measures to convert them into profitable ventures.
He announced that field visits would be conducted at the district level for this purpose, and so instructed officials to gradually replace the corporation's fleet with electric vehicles.
A PowerPoint presentation outlining the history, vision, mission and activities of Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation and Bangladesh Tourism Board will be delivered at the meeting.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary Fahmida Akhter, NDC, Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation Chairman Saima Shahin Sultana, and a senior official from the Ministry of the Corporation and Tourism Board attended the meeting. According to the BSS and TBS reports for March, Fahmida Akhtewasen was appointed as secretary to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism. National Hotel and Tourism Training Institute records indicate that Saima Shahin Sultan assumed the role of Chairman at Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation on 20 November 2024.
