Summit LNG renews skills development programme till 2026
Summit LNG (SLNG), a subsidiary of Summit Group, Bangladesh's largest infrastructure conglomerate, has extended its Livelihood Enhancement Project (LEP) for an additional year — until September 2026 — as part of its continued commitment to improving the livelihoods of local coastal communities.
Implemented in partnership with Young Power in Social Action (YPSA), the first phase of the project ran from 2020 to 2024, benefiting 1,591 individuals through skills development and entrepreneurship support. Around Tk 1 crore in grants was disbursed to small-scale fishermen from the Ghotibhanga, Sonadia, Tajiakata, and Nayapara areas.
Under the programme, men received vocational training in boat repair and were provided with toolkits, helping them earn an average monthly income of Tk 9,000–12,000. Women received training in tailoring, fishnet weaving, and solar-based fish drying techniques, along with electric sewing machines and fishing gear, enabling them to generate additional income by renting out equipment.
As part of its community development efforts, SLNG also renovated the Sonadia Government Primary School at a cost of about Tk 40 lakh and formally handed it over to the Upazila Education Officer (UEO).
The signing ceremony for the project extension was attended by key officials from both organisations. From SLNG — Md Sayedul Alam, Managing Director and CEO; Mohammed Shamsul Alam, Advisor; Md Rafiqul Islam, Senior Manager; and Md Mehedi Hasan Ovi, Deputy Manager (EHS). From YPSA — Dr Md Arifur Rahman, Founder and Chief Executive; Nasim Banu, Director of Social Development; and Md Nazmul Haider, Assistant Director — were present.
