SUB holds health awareness seminar and breast cancer screening
The Institute of Skill Development and Continuing Education (ISDCE) of the State University of Bangladesh (SUB) held a health awareness seminar and a breast cancer screening programme today.
The event was themed "Her Health, Her Power: Be Aware, Be Brave, Be Cared."
Faculty, students, officials, and women from the local community participated in the day-long event.
Professor Dr. Akhtar Hossain Khan, Vice-Chancellor of SUB, attended as the Chief Guest. Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Nawzia Yasmin presided over the session. Mahmudur Rahman, Director of ISDCE, delivered the welcome address.
Professor Dr Habibullah Talukder Raskin, a renowned cancer epidemiologist and preventive oncologist, presented the keynote paper. He highlighted global and national trends in breast cancer, risk factors, early detection signs, and the importance of regular screening. He remarked, "Prevention is far more cost-effective and impactful than treatment. Awareness and early detection can save countless lives every year."
Jahan-e-Gulshan Shapla, a breast cancer survivor and Secretary General of the Centre for Cancer Care Foundation, shared her testimony in a special session. Public health expert Dr. Abu Jamil Faisal and Amitav Bhattacharya, CEO of Harmony Trust, also addressed attendees.
Ms Mahmuda Mitu, Women's Health Educator and Self-Screening Trainer at Harmony Trust, led a practical session on self-examination techniques. Free breast cancer screening was offered to female faculty, staff, students, and local women. Many accessed this service for the first time.
The organisers announced plans to continue these initiatives with regular health awareness campaigns and annual screening programs. NanoGroup's support showed a strong commitment to corporate social responsibility for women's health.
SUB reaffirmed its commitment to women's health as vital to family well-being and societal advancement. It also emphasised its broader social responsibility beyond academics.
