Russian House launches week-long science festival
The Russian House in Dhaka has launched the Gagarin Science Festival 2026 to inspire scientific ambition and celebrate the 65th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's spaceflight, highlighting the strong ties between Russia and Bangladesh in science and education.
In her remarks, Alexandra Khlevnoy highlighted the global impact of Gagarin's 12 April 1961 flight. She called it the dawn of the space age and a milestone in human achievement. She noted that Gagarin's legacy continues to inspire youth in curiosity, courage, and scientific ambition.
Khlevnoy emphasised strong educational and cultural relations between Russia and Bangladesh. She cited collaboration on the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and noted over 6,000 Bangladeshi alumni from Russian and Soviet universities. She encouraged students to pursue science, explore new frontiers, and consider academic opportunities at Russian institutions via the Russian House. She thanked the Bangladesh Astronomical Association and all participants.
Organised by the Bangladesh Astronomical Association, the week-long festival aims to inspire youth to pursue science and innovation through engaging activities.
The opening day featured the inaugurations of two exhibitions: "Yuri Gagarin – First Human in Space" (photography) and a sculpture exhibition of a scientist. Screenings included documentaries from the VII International Film Festival "Tsiolkovsky," such as "Gagarin. Embracing the World," as well as the animated series "The Flying Story." The program also had a seminar on Albert Einstein by Arif Asgar and a student quiz competition.
Bangladesh Astronomical Association Chairman Moshurl Amin paid tribute to Yuri Gagarin, describing him as a "world hero" and a symbol of human courage and exploration.
All participants received certificates, and the event concluded with a telescope-based sky observation session.
The Yuri Gagarin photography and scientist sculpture exhibitions will remain open to visitors from 10 to 16 April 2026.
