Rooppur unit-1 gets commissioning licence for fuel loading
The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant's first unit has received a commissioning licence from BAERA, allowing fuel loading to begin.
The licence was granted following observation and review by national and international regulatory bodies. The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) is now prepared to begin fuel loading at the first unit.
On Thursday (16 April), Mahmudul Hasan, Chairman of BAERA, formally handed over the commissioning licence and related personnel authorisation to Dr M Moinul Islam, Chairman of BAEC.
Prior to receiving the licence, project authorities completed the required technical tests and preparatory work for the construction of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. Concurrently, BAERA, as the national regulatory body, conducted observation, evaluation, and review activities in accordance with international standards. The licence was granted upon satisfactory completion of these processes. Officials from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Construction Project and Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Ltd (NPCBL) were present at the handover.
According to the press release, fuel loading is a critical stage in the commissioning of a nuclear power plant. This phase marks the beginning of the plant's transition from construction to operational status, as nuclear fuel is loaded into the reactor and preparations for electricity generation are completed through a series of tests.
The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is considered a notable addition to Bangladesh's power sector. The start of fuel loading at its first unit represents a milestone in the country's development of nuclear power generation. Stakeholders, policymakers, and the public are encouraged to engage with this development and support continued advancement in the country's energy infrastructure.
