Pharmacy, Engineering faculties of DU host joint symposium with DAAD
The Faculty of Pharmacy, in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the University of Dhaka and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), organised a day-long symposium on "Strengthening Industry-Academia Partnership in Healthcare and Materials Science" on 18 September at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building of the university.
The event began with remarks from Professor Selim Reza, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, and Professor Upama Kabir, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology. The symposium was convened by Professor Aslam Hossain of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, with Professor Shimul Halder serving as member secretary.
Approximately 400 participants attended, comprising faculty members and students from Dhaka University, representatives from public and private universities, delegates from 30 leading pharmaceutical companies, and government officials. Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan joined as the chief guest, while the pro-vice-chancellors and other dignitaries also attended.
The academic sessions featured a plenary lecture by Professor Abdur Rashid of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and a special lecture by Professor Emeritus AK Azad Chowdhury of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology. In total, 46 presenters from academia and industry shared research findings, while 40 young researchers showcased posters on recent work, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange.
Two DAAD representatives also highlighted the numerous study and research opportunities available in Germany. In the closing session, Professor Mamun Ahmed, pro-vice-chancellor (academic), addressed the audience and presented awards to the winners of the poster competition.
The symposium fostered dialogue between academia and industry, paving the way for future joint research projects, innovation in healthcare and materials science, and enhanced capacity building. Key outcomes included agreements to explore collaborative research initiatives, increased networking between academic and industrial leaders, and recognition of young researchers. Dhaka University said such initiatives reaffirm its role as a national leader in higher education and research.
