NSU professor Mamun Molla elected Fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences
North South University (NSU) Professor Dr Md Mamun Molla, chairman of the Department of Mathematics and Physics, has been elected as a Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) in recognition of his contributions to scientific research in mathematics, computational fluid dynamics and high-performance computing.
Professor Molla has been associated with NSU since September 2011 and currently leads the university's Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and High-Performance Computing (HPC) research group. He previously served as research coordinator of the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, according to a press release.
He was inducted as an Associate Fellow of BAS in 2019. His election as a Fellow recognises his sustained contributions to scientific research and academic excellence in Bangladesh and internationally.
Congratulating Professor Molla, NSU Vice Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury said the recognition marked a significant milestone in his academic career as well as for the university. He expressed hope that the honour would further inspire Professor Molla to advance research and contribute to scientific excellence.
Professor Molla's research focuses on computational fluid dynamics and high-performance computing, including boundary-layer and turbulent flows, Direct Numerical Simulation, Large-Eddy Simulation, hybrid RANS/LES techniques, natural and mixed convection flows, and the lattice Boltzmann method using GPU-based computing. His work also covers computational blood flow and parallel computing using MPI, OpenMP and GPU technologies.
He completed his BSc (Honours) in Mathematics and MSc in Applied Mathematics at the University of Dhaka and earned an MPhil in Mathematics from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet). He began his academic career as a lecturer in mathematics at Buet.
In 2005, Professor Molla received the Overseas Research Scholarship to pursue a PhD in Computational Fluid Dynamics at the University of Glasgow, which he completed in July 2009. He later worked as a postdoctoral research fellow in Computational Fluid Dynamics and high-performance parallel computing at the University of Manitoba, Canada, from October 2009 to August 2011.
Expressing his gratitude, Professor Molla said the recognition would inspire him to pursue further research and contribute to the advancement of science and education in Bangladesh.
Professor Molla has received almost 3,900 citations on Google Scholar and won the NSU Research Excellence Award in 2021 and 2023. In 2025, he was listed among the world's top 2% of scientists by Stanford University.
With more than 200 peer-reviewed publications in international journals and conference proceedings, Professor Molla has made significant contributions to his field and has presented his research at numerous conferences in Bangladesh and abroad.
