NSU Law Department launches Business Law Talks

The Department of Law at North South University (NSU) successfully held the inaugural session of its new Business Law Talks series on July 22, 2025, with a lecture titled "Labour Law for Teachers." The event took place at the university's Moot Court Room (NAC 616) and drew a diverse audience of students, academics, and legal professionals.
The lecture was delivered by Advocate Saquib Rahman, a senior lecturer at the Department of Law, NSU, and provided participants with in-depth insights into the legal complexities surrounding employment rights for educators.
Associate Professor Dr Ishtiaque Ahmed, barrister and chair of the Department of Law, gave the opening remarks. He expressed gratitude to Advocate Rahman for his valuable contribution and for sharing his legal expertise with the audience.
Professor Dr Rizwanul Islam, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, praised the Department for organizing such a timely and academically enriching event. He expressed hope for similar initiatives in the future.
During the session, Advocate Rahman provided a comprehensive overview of how the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006 applies—or does not apply—to teachers. He explained that institutions, such as universities, fall outside the direct purview of the Act and are instead allowed to adopt their own service rules. However, according to Section 3 of the Labour Act, these service rules must not be less favourable than those provided under the Act and must be approved by the Inspector General.
He also raised important concerns regarding the potential for employers to unilaterally amend these service rules, highlighting the risks this poses to job security and the fair treatment of teachers.
The Q&A segment featured a lively discussion on the possibility of misuse by employers, particularly the implications of changes made without employee consent.
The programme concluded with a group photograph of all participants, marking the launch of a promising platform for discourse on legal issues in business and employment.
