NRB Bank leads cashless Bangladesh campaign in Cumilla

NRB Bank PLC led a two-day seminar and roadshow in Cumilla, titled "Cashless Bangladesh," to promote Bangla QR transactions.
Events took place at Cumilla University and Victoria College, drawing officials from 45 regional banks.
The programme was presided over by Rafeza Akhter Kanta, Director of the Payment Systems Department at the Bangladesh Bank, and inaugurated by Arief Hossain Khan, Executive Director of the Bangladesh Bank. NRB Bank Managing Director (current charge) Anwar Uddin and other officials attended as guests.
The initiative aimed to increase public awareness of the benefits of cashless digital transactions, especially QR code payments. As an outcome of the event, many attendees registered for Bangla QR services, and several local merchants expressed interest in adopting cashless payment solutions.
Speakers at the event highlighted the Bangladesh Bank governor's observation that the cost of handling cash exceeds Tk20,000 crore annually, which can be significantly reduced through cashless transactions. A target has been set to minimise cash usage and move towards a zero-cash economy within the next decade.
They also noted that a cashless economy will strengthen financial discipline, reduce counterfeit currency, and improve economic efficiency. Many countries have adopted cashless systems, and Bangladesh is following suit.
Other notable attendees included NRB Bank Deputy Managing Director. Shaheen Howlader, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Tanzina Jahan, and Additional Director Parvez Anjum Monir from the Bangladesh Bank, signifying the event's importance.
