NICRH trains over 100 oncologists in image-guided radiotherapy
A day-long training workshop on image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) at the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital (NICRH) in Dhaka today drew more than 100 radiation oncologists from public and private hospitals across Bangladesh.
Organised by NICRH, the workshop titled "Role of IGRT and Radiotherapy in Cancer Treatment" was held at the institute's auditorium in Mohakhali from 8am to 4pm on 28 September, 2026, according to the press release.
The sessions focused on the practical application of IGRT and current clinical practice, with particular emphasis on correcting motion-related errors during radiotherapy and managing uncertainties in treatment delivery.
Professor Marcel van Herk of the University of Manchester, UK, and Dr Rianne De Jong, a clinical scientist at Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands, conducted the training and discussed the practical use of IGRT and related clinical practice.
NICRH Director Professor Dr Mostafa Aziz Sumon attended the event with cancer specialists from different institutions across the country.
Participants praised the initiative and called for similar workshops in the future.
"Programmes like this are extremely beneficial for us. Our country does not have enough machines, yet we continue to serve patients despite many limitations. Initiatives such as this enhance our skills and keep us motivated," they said.
At the end of the programme, Mostafa Aziz Sumon and NICRH Department of Radiation Oncology Head Professor Dr Shahida Alam presented crests of honour to the international trainers.
Renata PLC was the workshop's scientific partner.
Amir Abdullah, head of the company's oncology and haematology portfolio, said, "Renata PLC has always strived to make meaningful contributions to the advancement of modern, science-based cancer care in Bangladesh, and we hope to continue this commitment in the future."
