National University promotes cyber safety and digital literacy among freshers

A mobile application called 'Cyber Explorer', designed to raise awareness on cybersecurity among students, was officially launched yesterday during the orientation programme for first-year undergraduate students of the 2024–25 academic session under the National University (NU).
In addition, several student development initiatives were announced at the program, including the inauguration of a mental health club, a career club, a multi-language club, and a cybersecurity lab, aiming to provide practical learning opportunities on digital safety and online skills.
Special Guest and Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, Mohammad Shafiqul Alam, emphasised the importance of awareness in the digital age in his speech, saying, "Information technology has become indispensable in modern life. Everyone must remain alert to protect themselves from cyberbullying.
Another special guest, UNICEF Representative in Bangladesh, Rana Flowers, announced a joint initiative by UNICEF and the National University under which students will be equipped with skills, communication abilities, and opportunities to help them successfully enter the workforce.
"In a country with over 800,000 unemployed graduates, this initiative under UNICEF's global program Generation Unlimited aims to transform education into employment opportunities," she added.
The university will initially provide freelancing training to 50,000 female students, followed by male students. Exam reforms and initiatives to return students to classrooms aim to cut the session backlog by 70–80% by 2026.
The program sponsor, Grameenphone's Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Tanvir Mohammad, expressed commitment to help students build AI skills to thrive in the digital world.
National University Vice-Chancellor Prof ASM Amanullah presided over the orientation, welcoming new students. UGC Chairman Prof SMA Faiz urged them to emulate the courage of the July uprisings and contribute to the nation, treating their institution like family.
Newly admitted students from nearly 1,000 colleges affiliated with NU participated in the program online, enabling a wide reach for the cybersecurity initiative.
