LafargeHolcim brings experts together on resilient construction
LafargeHolcim Bangladesh PLC organised the Engineer Summit 2025 on Sunday at Rose View Hotel, bringing together structural experts, academics and industry professionals from the Sylhet region.
The summit focused on the theme "Importance of Concrete in Earthquake Resilience and Sustainability", highlighting the need for disaster-resilient infrastructure in Bangladesh, particularly in high seismic risk zones.
A technical session was held to address earthquake resilience in construction. Raquib Ahsan, Professor of Civil Engineering at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), delivered the keynote address, emphasising the role of high-quality construction materials and advanced engineering practices in mitigating seismic risks.
The programme also featured a panel discussion with Mushtaq Ahmed, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Subrata Das, Associate Professor of Architecture, both from the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). The session was moderated by Fakhruddin Mohammad Khan, Head of Innovation and Technical Services at LafargeHolcim Bangladesh.
Mohammad Mahfuzul Hoque, Commercial and Logistics Director of LafargeHolcim Bangladesh, attended the event as a special guest. Speaking at the summit, he said sustainable construction must prioritise safety and resilience alongside longevity, adding that collaboration between academia and industry is essential to building infrastructure capable of withstanding seismic challenges.
Fakhruddin Mohammad Khan also delivered a technical presentation on LafargeHolcim's specialised product range, including Supercrete and Holcim cement, highlighting their role in enhancing structural integrity and seismic resistance in demanding environments.
Participants welcomed the initiative, noting Sylhet's vulnerability as one of the country's high-risk seismic zones. The summit concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, where engineers and architects discussed practical approaches to implementing earthquake-resistant designs using advanced construction materials.
LafargeHolcim Bangladesh said it continues to promote green building practices and technical excellence through such knowledge-sharing initiatives.
