Kazi Salahuddin Ahmed presents solo exhibition ‘City of Memories’
The event will be attended by Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet, ambassador of France to Bangladesh, as the chief guest. Asif A Chowdhury, honorary consul for Chile in Bangladesh, and artist Mustafa Zaman will join as special guests.
The exhibition features nearly one hundred miniature artworks, offering viewers a glimpse into the artist's latest explorations.
Kazi Salahuddin Ahmed lives in Old Dhaka, a part of the city whose history dates back to the Mughal era. Once a centre of trade and culture, Old Dhaka still holds a rhythm of life that feels intimate and timeless. In its narrow lanes and shared courtyards, families have long lived close to one another, their stories intertwined.
But time has not been gentle with the city. The impact of the British colonial period on its economy and the memories of the Liberation War of 1971 remain in the collective consciousness. Today, in the name of development, another wave of change is reshaping the landscape. Old homes, ornate façades, and quiet courtyards — long-standing testaments to history — are being replaced by concrete and glass structures. What was once lived memory is gradually fading.
Inspired by the storytelling traditions of Mughal miniature painting, Salahuddin rebuilds this world in his art. Through layered colours, architectural fragments, and fleeting figures, he captures not only what is being lost but also what endures — a sense of belonging, resilience, and community. His paintings remind viewers that memory is fragile yet deeply human, and that preserving the stories of our cities means preserving who we are.
Kazi Salahuddin Ahmed is a noted artist who held his first exhibition in 1987. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions and held around thirty solo shows in Bangladesh and abroad, including in France, the United States, India, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, China, Japan, Australia, Nepal, Iran, and the former Yugoslavia.
The exhibition will run until Saturday, 29 November, 2025, and will be open to visitors from Monday to Saturday, 11am to 8pm, at Alliance Française de Dhaka, Gulshan — House 8, Road 7, Gulshan 1.
