Journalism’s new challenges discussed at SUB freshers’ event

The Department of Journalism, Communication and Media Studies (JCMS) at State University of Bangladesh (SUB) hosted a lively freshers' reception to welcome students of the thirty-fifth and thirty-sixth batches at its permanent campus in Purbachal, Dhaka, on Saturday, 11 October.
To mark the occasion, a seminar entitled 'Post-July Uprising Journalism: Crisis and Prospects' was held, with Azad Mazumder, Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, as keynote speaker.
In his address, Azad Mazumder observed, 'Journalism is a profession that presents new challenges every day. After the July uprising, the landscape of journalism in Bangladesh has changed dramatically. Previously, many journalists practised self-censorship due to state and corporate control. Now, journalists enjoy unprecedented freedom—and that very freedom has become the biggest challenge today.
He added, 'With the advancement of information technology, misinformation spreads faster than ever. Those who can fight against misinformation and disinformation to establish the truth will survive in journalism—the rest will fade away. '
Professor Dr Akhtar Hossain Khan, Vice-Chancellor of SUB, attended the event as the Chief Guest. Addressing the new students, he said, 'Journalism is not just a profession; it is a noble commitment to society, the state and humanity. You must develop yourself through integrity, knowledge and technological competence.
Md Shamsul Islam, Chairman of the Department of JCMS, delivered the welcome speech, while Dr Ahmed Hossain, Registrar of the university, and Shah Reza M Fahad Hossain, Proctor, also spoke on the occasion. The programme was anchored by Tasfia Nahian Hafiz, Lecturer at the Department of JCMS.
