JICA and LJD train legal professionals to improve access to justice

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has completed the Advanced Mediation Training for Legal Professionals under the Access to Justice Project (A2J Project). Conducted in collaboration with the Law and Justice Division (LJD) of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and the Judicial Administration Training Institute (JATI), the training aimed to enhance the mediation skills of judges, legal aid officers, and lawyers engaged in dispute resolution.
Launched in April 2024, the A2J Project promotes effective access to justice in Bangladesh. A foundational Mediation Training course was held in November 2024 at JATI, followed by the recent Advanced Mediation Training, which focused on deepening participants' expertise and practical application of advanced mediation techniques.
World-renowned mediation expert Professor MIYATAKE Masako from Japan led the training, combining theoretical insights with hands-on mock mediation exercises. Fifty judges, district legal aid officers, lawyers from the pilot districts of Narsingdi and Cumilla, and officials from related judicial institutions participated in the program.
At the closing ceremony, certificates were presented by Professor MIYATAKE, attended by Sheikh Abu Taher, Secretary of the Law and Justice Division, and ICHIGUCHI Tomohide, Chief Representative of JICA Bangladesh Office. Both emphasized the importance of mediation training in improving dispute resolution and access to justice in Bangladesh.
