EWU conference explores information practices in AI era

The 4th International Conference on Information and Knowledge Management (i-IKM 2025) commenced on 16 September at East West University's Manzur Elahi Auditorium in Dhaka, heralding a major gathering of global thought leaders.
Organised by the Department of Information Studies, the three-day event highlights the crucial theme 'From access to action: Rethinking information practices in an AI-driven society,' underscoring the conference's role in shaping future information landscapes.
EWU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Shams Rahman attended as the chief guest, with Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr M Ashik Mosaddik chairing the opening session and Professor Dr. Dilara Begum delivering the welcome address.
In his inaugural speech, Professor Rahman said, "Artificial intelligence is influencing almost every aspect of life today. Its use is rapidly expanding not just in technology or data science, but also in education, health, business, agriculture, and even security. However, it is crucial to understand the risks and benefits of AI before using it. For example, in business and administration, the improper use of AI can lead to incorrect decision-making, financial losses, or reduced customer satisfaction. Additionally, AI-generated content makes it difficult to distinguish between false information, misinformation, and disinformation, creating challenges for information reliability in an AI-driven society."
Additional speakers included Dr Hajime Shirasaka of Japan, with keynote addresses from Professor Bernd Markscheffel of Germany and Professor Jean-Charles Lamirel of France.
Professor Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, chairperson of EWU's Board of Trustees and former governor of Bangladesh Bank, was also present. Bringing together over 80 research papers from six countries, this year's conference marks a pivotal moment for collaboration and advancing information practices in the region.
