EPB hosts session on safeguarding Bangladeshi food exports to the EU

Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) hosted a meeting titled "Precautionary measures and actions for exporting Bangladeshi food products to the European Union" at its conference room On 18 September 2024. Chaired by EPB Vice-Chairman Mr. Md. Anwar Hossain, the meeting brought together representatives from various government bodies, private institutions, associations, and exporters.

The session began with EPB's Product Department Director, Mr. Md. Shahjalal, addressing the recent ban on Indian food and spice imports by the European Food Safety Authority due to the presence of ethylene oxide, a carcinogenic chemical. He noted that this situation, while posing a risk to Bangladesh, also presents an opportunity for Bangladeshi exporters to strengthen their position in the EU market.

The meeting focused on several key areas, including the current state of Bangladeshi food exports to the EU, the importance of adhering to food safety standards, challenges in obtaining international health certifications, and the need for improved regulation of chemical usage in food products. The discussion also touched upon simplifying services to increase global exports of Bangladeshi products.

Participants from Majestic Enterprise Ltd., the Bangladesh Fruits, Vegetables, and Allied Products Exporters Association, and Department of Agricultural Extension shared insights on export challenges and emphasised the importance of maintaining international quality standards. Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) also assured its support in helping Bangladeshi food products meet EU requirements.

In closing, the EPB Vice-Chairman pledged to take necessary measures to overcome export obstacles, incorporating recommendations from the meeting.
