EBL honours five organisations at climate change action awards
Eastern Bank PLC hosted the second edition of the EBL Climate Change Action Awards 2026, recognising five organisations for their innovative and impactful initiatives addressing climate change challenges in Bangladesh.
The award ceremony was held at the Radisson Blu Water Garden Hotel, Dhaka, on Tuesday.
The event brought together policymakers, diplomats, business leaders and development partners to highlight private-sector leadership and grassroots innovation in climate action.
Dr Ahsan H Mansur, governor of Bangladesh Bank, attended the ceremony as the chief guest. In his remarks, he underscored the role of the private sector in strengthening climate resilience and advancing sustainable finance, noting that innovation is critical to safeguarding Bangladesh's economic future.
The EBL Climate Change Action Awards, an annual initiative of Eastern Bank in partnership with the embassies of Germany, France, Denmark and Sweden, as well as the European Union Delegation to Bangladesh, honoured excellence across five categories.
The winners were Siam City Cement (Bangladesh) Limited for green manufacturing; Cassetex Ltd for energy efficiency; Youth Action for Sustainable Future (YASF) for climate-smart agriculture; Somoy Nature for climate education and policy advocacy; and Green Delta Insurance PLC for climate adaptation and resilience.
Speaking at the event, Ali Reza Iftekhar, managing director of Eastern Bank PLC, said the initiatives demonstrated the strength of locally driven solutions in addressing a global challenge. He added that collaboration across sectors is essential for effective climate action and sustainable development.
The ceremony was also addressed by Dr Rüdiger Lotz, ambassador of Germany; Christian Brix Møller, ambassador of Denmark; Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet, ambassador of France; Michael Miller, ambassador and head of the EU delegation to Bangladesh; and Nicolas Weeks, ambassador of Sweden. The speakers reaffirmed their commitment to supporting climate action and sustainable growth in Bangladesh.
The selection process was conducted through a rigorous and transparent evaluation. The Centre for Participatory Research and Development's research team shortlisted 26 nominations across multiple sectors. A jury of industry experts and sustainability practitioners then selected one winner in each category based on impact, scalability, innovation and long-term sustainability.
Through the EBL Climate Change Action Awards, Eastern Bank said it continues to reinforce its commitment to sustainable finance, responsible banking and national climate priorities, encouraging organisations and changemakers to take effective action against climate change.
