DNCC installs JCS waste compression system at Mirpur STS
Japan Clean System Co Ltd (JCS), with support from Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), has installed its waste compression and storage system, J-DRUM, at the Arambag Secondary Transfer Station (STS) in Mirpur, Dhaka.
The system began operations on 23 December, marking a step towards improving efficiency and hygiene in urban waste management. The installation was inaugurated by Mohammad Azaz, Administrator of DNCC; Commodore ABM Shamsul Alam, Chief Waste Management Officer of DNCC; Masataka Yamano, Senior Managing Director of JCS; and Izumi Shoji, Senior Representative of the JICA Bangladesh Office.
According to JCS, the J-DRUM system addresses key challenges at secondary transfer stations, including manual waste handling, congestion caused by compactor truck queues, and environmental concerns arising from odour and liquid leakage. By automating waste loading and unloading, the system improves operational efficiency, reduces labour intensity, and optimises land use at STS facilities.
The system features a space-saving design, automated waste handling to enhance worker safety, and hygienic storage that prevents odour, noise, and water leakage. Constructed with stainless steel, J-DRUM is designed for durability and has been deployed in more than 1,600 units globally, accounting for an estimated 60–70 per cent market share in Japan.
The installation forms part of an ongoing project under the SDGs Business Verification Survey, which aims to promote efficient and hygienic waste management systems in Bangladesh. The initiative is also exploring the feasibility of local production to reduce costs and expand accessibility.
JCS stated that the project is expected to improve working conditions for STS staff, reduce waste management and transportation costs for municipalities, enhance environmental hygiene around STSs and nearby facilities, and contribute to the modernisation of Bangladesh's waste management system.
