DNCC allocates nursery space to 25 women entrepreneurs
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has allocated space to 25 women entrepreneurs to set up nurseries as part of an initiative to expand urban greening, protect the environment, and promote women's economic empowerment.
Each entrepreneur has been allotted 200 square feet of temporary space.
The allocation letters were handed over at a ceremony held at DNCC Nagar Bhaban this afternoon. Mohammad Ejaz, Administrator of DNCC, attended the event as chief guest, while Mohammad Shawkat Osman, Chief Property Officer of DNCC, presided over the programme.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mohammad Ejaz stated that the initiative would be expanded in phases. "We are initially providing this facility to 25 women entrepreneurs. Gradually, space will be allocated for up to 100 women entrepreneurs," he said.
He stated that Dhaka faces an acute shortage of open and green spaces due to unplanned urbanisation and the filling of water bodies, which has placed the city at environmental risk. "Bringing greenery back to the city is essential to reduce health risks and build a liveable Dhaka," he said.
The DNCC administrator stated that the initiative aims to create women-led green spaces and ensure women's participation in the city-building process. He stated that women's involvement in urban policy-making has historically been limited, despite being crucial for sustainable city management.
"We are working towards developing women-led green spaces and gender-centric green infrastructure as part of an inclusive urban movement," he said, adding that further greening activities would be introduced gradually through ward-based strategic planning.
Sonia Haque, a beneficiary of the programme, stated that the allocation would help ensure business stability. "Earlier, we had to change locations frequently due to the lack of a fixed place. Having a designated space will help sustain our business while contributing to a greener and cleaner city," she said.
DNCC stated that the initiative is expected to support the development of green infrastructure, improve the civic environment, and open new avenues for women's economic empowerment.
Among others present were Muhammad Asaduzzaman, Chief Executive Officer of DNCC; Brigadier General Md Moin Uddin, Chief Engineer; and Brigadier General Imrul Kayes Chowdhury, Chief Health Officer of DNCC.
