DIU disburses insurance claims to students’ guardians
Daffodil International University (DIU) and Prime Islami Life Insurance Limited jointly organised a 'Guardian Insurance Claim Cheque Handover Ceremony' on Wednesday, 7 January, at the Daffodil Smart City campus, marking a significant milestone in student welfare support.
Under the university's special Student Guardian Insurance Policy, a total of 102 cheques amounting to Tk3.06 crore were handed over in three phases to students and their guardians on the day.
Launched in 2019, the initiative has so far disbursed more than Tk15 crore in insurance claims to 504 guardians, providing vital financial assistance during times of hardship.
The insurance scheme was introduced to ensure that students' education is not disrupted due to sudden financial crises arising from the death of a guardian or a serious illness. University officials said the programme represents a first-of-its-kind initiative in Bangladesh's higher education sector.
Speaking at the event, Vice-Chancellor of DIU, Professor Dr M R Kabir, encouraged students to transform grief into strength and remain steadfast in pursuing their education and aspirations. He said the university is committed to fostering an environment where students feel supported and confident, even in the most challenging circumstances.
In his address, Treasurer of DIU, Dr Md Hamidul Hoque Khan, said the initiative was inspired by the visionary leadership of Dr Md Sabur Khan, Chairman of the Daffodil family. He said the primary objective is to ensure that no talented student is forced to abandon their academic journey due to financial constraints. While the loss of a parent can never be replaced, he added, the university and Prime Islami Life Insurance remain committed to standing beside students during such difficult times.
Managing Director and CEO of Prime Islami Life Insurance Limited, Md Shamsul Alam, attended the programme as a special guest. Senior officials from both organisations were also present at the ceremony.
DIU officials said the university remains committed to student welfare, and that initiatives such as this are helping to build a more humane and student-centric policy framework in the country's higher education system.
