Bridge Secretary reviews progress of Karnaphuli tunnel operations
Mohammad Abdur Rauf, Secretary of the Bridges Division and Executive Director of the Bangladesh Bridge Authority, today inspected the operation and maintenance of the Karnaphuli Tunnel in Chattogram.
During the day-long visit, he assessed strategies to increase tunnel revenue and reviewed ongoing efforts to install advanced equipment for infrastructure safety.
He noted that the prime minister has directed authorities to modernise the country's communications system. To realise this vision, the minister and state minister of the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry are providing ongoing guidance and oversight.
The visit began with an inspection of the Karnaphuli Dry Dock Limited jetty adjacent to the tunnel. He subsequently attended a meeting with key stakeholders to discuss enhancing the tunnel's utility and revenue by integrating the jetty.
Discussions focused on the potential for multipurpose use of the Karnaphuli Dry Dock jetty to increase toll collection and overall tunnel revenue.
He emphasised the need to expand cargo movement and logistics facilities to maximise the tunnel's effectiveness as a key driver of the national economy. He added that integrated use and improved connectivity between the tunnel and the jetty could boost user numbers and state revenue. He instructed the relevant authorities to promptly prepare a coordinated action plan.
To ensure long-term durability and structural safety, advanced health monitoring equipment is being installed. This equipment will help identify issues early, reduce maintenance costs, and minimise tunnel closures, benefiting both users and authorities. The secretary inspected the facility's automated sensors and monitoring systems in operation.
Authorities stated that the technology will enable real-time monitoring of ventilation, earthquake resilience, and detection of cracks or faults within the tunnel, ensuring timely intervention and greater tunnel safety for users.
Addressing the engineers, he said: 'No shortcomings are acceptable in the safety and maintenance of the tunnel. We must ensure the highest standards for this mega project, comparable to those of developed countries, through the use of modern technology.'
He instructed engineers and officials to complete installation of the sensitive equipment within the stipulated timeframe and to maintain strict standards throughout the process.
Notable attendees included Engineer Abdur Rashid, Managing Director of Karnaphuli Dry Dock Limited; senior officials of the Bangladesh Bridge Authority; officials from the Karnaphuli Tunnel site office; and other representatives of Karnaphuli Dry Dock Limited.
