BRAC Bank, WaterAid to provide clean water for 10,000 people

Press Release

Last modified: 05 February, 2025, 12:21 pm
Md. Sabbir Hossain, Deputy Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer at BRAC Bank, and Hasin Jahan, the Country Director of WaterAid Bangladesh, signed the agreement to launch this project on 4 February 2025 at WaterAid Bangladesh's office in Dhaka.

BRAC Bank has partnered with WaterAid Bangladesh to support more than 10,000 individuals living in the coastal region of Satkhira to gain access to safe drinking water, improved sanitation, and better hygiene.

This initiative is part of BRAC Bank's flagship CSR programme, Aporajeyo Water Entrepreneur (WE), which aims to mitigate and adapt to climate change, aligning with Bangladesh Bank guidelines.

This initiative aims to establish five water purification plants in the water-scarce areas of Gabura and Padma Pukur unions of Shyamnagar, Satkhira, to enhance access to clean water.

Additionally, the programme will improve sanitation facilities and implement a rainwater collection system at three local health clinics, fostering improved health and well-being for the community.

By introducing reverse osmosis (RO) water filtration systems and conducting awareness workshops on hygiene practices, the initiative seeks to significantly reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases such as cholera and dysentery, often worsened by saline water sources.

Furthermore, by promoting community engagement and collaboration, Aporajeyo WE will improve overall health outcomes, resulting in a stronger and more resilient community where residents can thrive without the constant threat of water-related health issues.

A key aspect of this initiative is supporting local women by providing them with training to operate the RO plants. This will empower them to become water entrepreneurs and start small businesses focused on clean water, creating sustainable job opportunities that benefit women and their communities.

Sabbir Hossain emphasised that "Aporajeyo WE are not just about providing water—it's about building healthier communities, empowering women, and promoting long-term resilience against climate issues. We aim to create lasting improvements in people's lives for years."

Hasin Jahan added, "This partnership is crucial for ensuring that those who need safe water and sanitation the most receive it. By combining our expertise with BRAC Bank's dedication to social good, we can develop solutions that enhance public health, empower communities, especially women, and uplift local economies through promoting women-led enterprises."

As a values-based organisation, BRAC Bank continues to uphold CSR initiatives that break financial barriers and social taboos, creating opportunities and ensuring access for people to realise their potential and lead meaningful lives.

Along with decent toilets and good hygiene, a reliable supply of safe water is essential for health, dignity, and a life of opportunity. The 'Aporajeyo WE' initiative highlights BRAC Bank and WaterAid's commitment to building a more inclusive and climate- resilient society.
