BOU aids student blinded in train stone attack
Bangladesh Open University (BOU) has provided financial assistance to Md Sabbir Hossain, a first-year HSC student of the university, who lost vision in his right eye after being struck by a stone thrown by an unidentified miscreant at a moving train.
On Tuesday,11 August 2026, BOU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan handed over a financial assistance cheque to the injured student's father at the university's Dhaka office. Relevant university officials were present during the occasion, according to a press release.
On 21 July, 22-year-old Sabbir Hossain was returning to Dhaka after holidays aboard the Dhaka-bound Drutojan Express from Panchagarh when an unidentified person threw a stone at the moving train, critically injuring him. The stone severely damaged his right eye, with doctors stating there is no chance of regaining vision in that eye. He also sustained serious head injuries.

Following the incident, he was disembarked at Jamtail railway station for initial emergency treatment before being transferred to the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital in Dhaka for advanced medical care, where he is currently undergoing treatment. Law enforcement agencies are investigating the incident to identify those responsible, as reported by The Daily Campus.
BOU authorities have stepped forward to support the student during this tragedy, providing the financial aid as part of their contribution towards his medical expenses.
BOU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan said, "Bangladesh Open University is deeply committed to standing beside its students during any crisis or adversity. We wish Sabbir a speedy recovery and the university administration will extend all possible support towards his treatment."
