BASIC Bank organised seminar on NPL and Liability Management

To strengthen the recovery of non-performing loans (NPLs), state-owned BASIC Bank Limited organised a seminar on "Non-Performing Loan (NPL) and Liability Management" on Monday, February 17, 2025.
The Seminar was held at the bank's training institute in the capital. It brought together board members, senior executives, and the bank's internal task force team leaders to discuss strategic approaches to loan recovery and risk mitigation, procurement of deposits, providing SME loans, good customer services, etc.
Mr Helal Ahmed Chowdhury, Chairman of the bank's Board of Directors, attended as the Chief Guest, while Managing Director and CEO Md Quamruzzaman Khan presided over the Seminar and delivered the welcome speech. The event was also graced by esteemed board members, including Dr Nahid Hossain, Dr Md. Abdul Khaleque Khan (Freedom Fighter), and Md—Rafiqul Islam, who attended as special guests. The principal of the training institute, Iftekhar Ahmed, spoke on the occasion.
Abu Md. Mofazzal, Deputy Managing Director, and General Managers—including Md. Ismail, Md. Momenul Hoque, and Md. Nashir Uddin, Sumit Ranjan Nath, Md. Hasan Imam, Dulon Kanti Chakrabarty, Md. Ghulam Syeed Khan, and Md Saidur Rahman Sohel—were present. Notably, the heads of the newly formed 30 bank's internal task forces for NPL recovery also participated, underscoring the bank's commitment to resolving its classified loan issues, improving further fund positions, customer services, and other matters of daily banking activities.
During his address, Mr Helal Ahmed Chowdhury stressed the urgency of accelerating efforts to recover classified loans, highlighting the critical role of the bank's 30 internal task force team leaders in this endeavour. He urged officials to engage in exclusive negotiations with prospective defaulted borrowers under the prudential guidelines of the regulators and expedite legal procedures to ensure the smooth execution of the NPL recovery process.
Mr Chowdhury also stressed strict compliance with regulatory instructions and ethical standards. He impressed the officials with his suggestion that they change their mindsets and improve the bank's image by providing excellent customer service.
Dr. Nahid Hossain, the bank's Director, spoke on the recovery pursuing the expeditious disposal of legal issues. He also explained the different matrices of interest, exchange rates, etc., regarding their impact on enhancing loan classifications and their remedial measures.
Dr. Md. Abdul Khaleque Khan (Freedom Fighter), Director of the bank, spoke about locating and pursuing with respective agencies for recovery of bad loans. He also stressed good customer service.
Md. M. Latif Bhuiyan, the bank's Director, started with recovery drives and the actions of task force members, quick court case disposal, procurement of CASA deposits, and compliance with regulatory norms, requirements, KYC, etc.
Md. Rafiqul Islam, the bank's Director, focused on recovering classified loans and enhancing the bank's image by providing good customer services to government corporations, private individuals, and the general public.
In his speech, Md. Quamruzzaman Khan, Managing Director & CEO, urged everyone to work with visionary zeal to transform the bank's present position into a prestigious one. He elaborated on the modus operandi of the task forces' activities to ensure a successful outcome.
The Seminar also featured discussions on loan risk assessment, with speakers emphasising the importance of strict due diligence in borrower selection and mortgage evaluation to mitigate future loan defaults.
BASIC Bank has been grappling with NPL challenges in recent years, and this Seminar marks a significant step toward reinforcing its financial stability. The bank aims to implement a more structured and proactive approach to debt recovery and liability management by bringing together top executives and specialised task forces.
