Bangladesh Chatra Kallyan trust holds national round table

 To demand the formation of a commission and an increase in the budget for the development of education in Bangladesh, Chatra Kallyan Trust organised a national roundtable conference titled 'What kind of budget do we want for education?' on May 28, 2025.

Professor Dr Anwarullah Chowdhury, the former Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, was present as the chief guest at the national roundtable meeting organised at Dainik Ittefaq Bhaban under the auspices of Daffodil International University. The programme was presided over by Principal Nure Alam Talukder, Managing Director of Bangladesh Chatra Kallyan Trust. Among others, Professor Dr M Shamsher Ali, the founding Vice-Chancellor of the Open University, Professor Dr Farid Ahmed Sobhani, Vice-Chancellor of Eastern University, Abul Khair Chowdhury, Marketing Director of Daily Ittefaq, Md. Anwar Habib Kazal Senior Assistant Director (Public Relations) of Daffodil International University; Habibur Rahman, Former Deputy Secretary and Director of Bangladesh Chatra Kallyan Trust, Alamgir Kabir, Senior Teacher of Trust Model Academy; Rehana Parvin, Former Chief News Caster of Bangladesh Betar, BM Faisal Munir, Advocate Kamrun Nahar Liza, educational researchers and renowned educationists were present at the round table conference.

Speaking as the chief guest at the round table conference, former Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor Dr Anwarullah Chowdhury said, "Although we have seen many reform commissions in the changing Bangladesh, no commission has been formed for the overall development of the education system. In the past, we have submitted the Education Commission's report to various governments; however, there has been no review of the report or any practical application of its findings. The government's policymakers should also form an education reform commission with the participation of all the educationists of the country."

Highlighting the importance of private universities in the nation's development, Professor Dr Anwarullah Chowdhury stated that in the early 1990s, they had discussed the establishment of private universities with the then-Prime Minister, Begum Khaleda Zia, and initiated the process. The government should also give the responsibility of private universities to those who are passionate about education. He also stated that students of private universities are required to pay 15 per cent VAT to the government. Taking fees from educational institutions should be stopped.
Managing Director of the Bangladesh Student Welfare Trust, Principal Nur Alam Talukder, stated that the government's budget allocation to the education sector is less than 2%. In the developed world, the budget amount for the education sector is much higher. The government should prioritise the education sector and increase its budget allocation.Stressing the importance of moral education in the education system, he noted that the issue of moral education is currently absent from the country's education curriculum. Due to the lack of morality, today's moral work is complete in all fields.

He commented that it is the demand of the time to restructure NCTV and focus on moral education in the curriculum.
