Amar Ekushey observed peacefully at DU
Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day were observed at the University of Dhaka (DU) with due solemnity and in a peaceful atmosphere on 21 February 2026, according to a press release.
The day's events took place at the Central Shaheed Minar under the management of DU. In the early hours of 21 February, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan welcomed guests who arrived to pay tribute to the language martyrs.
Among those present were Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Sayma Haque Bidisha, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed, Treasurer Professor Dr M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, members of the central coordination committee formed for the observance of Amar Ekushey, as well as teachers and officials.
In the first hour of Ekushey, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid separate floral tributes at the Shaheed Minar in memory of the language martyrs. The prime minister offered prayers after placing wreaths and later paid homage alongside cabinet members. She also placed wreaths in her capacity as President of the Bangladesh Awami League.
Following the prime minister, the Chief Justice and chiefs of the three services also paid homage. Leaders of various political parties, diplomats, representatives of socio-cultural organisations, and officials of government and non-government institutions placed wreaths in tribute.
On behalf of the DU family, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan placed a wreath at the altar in the early hours, accompanied by teachers, officials, and employees.
As part of the university's programme, a silent procession and probhat pheri began at 6:30am from Smriti Chirantan Square, led by the vice-chancellor, and proceeded to the Central Shaheed Minar via Udayan School.
Special prayers were held at the DU Central Mosque and other mosques and places of worship, seeking eternal peace for the souls of the martyrs.
