ADB approves $115.8m loan for Narayanganj urban services
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide a US$115.8 million loan to help Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) enhance environmentally sustainable and resilient urban services, reinforcing Bangladesh's commitment to modern urban infrastructure.
The project will upgrade the drinking water supply, modernise drainage, and expand green spaces, while building institutional capacity within NCC and local communities. It aims to benefit at least 400,000 residents, support efforts to ease congestion in Dhaka, and strengthen governance and service delivery.
"Narayanganj is central to Bangladesh's urban transformation. As urbanisation accelerates and environmental risks intensify, strengthening urban services is both a development and economic imperative," said ADB Country Director for Bangladesh, Hoe Yun Jeong. He added that investment in reliable water supply, resilient drainage, and inclusive green spaces—coupled with stronger institutions—will boost productivity, drive economic growth, advance environmental sustainability, and contribute to long-term human capital development.
The project will improve water supply efficiency and reliability by modernising pipelines, installing household meters, and introducing digital management systems for better billing and revenue collection.
NCC's water supply capacity is expected to increase through new and upgraded infrastructure.
To improve resilience, the project will increase surface water use, develop drainage systems using nature-based solutions, enhance green spaces, and ensure NCC maintains these assets.
ADB reiterated its commitment to inclusive, resilient, and sustainable growth across Asia and the Pacific through targeted financing, strategic partnerships, and infrastructure development.
