55th Independence and National Day of Bangladesh Celebrated in Algiers

The Embassy of Bangladesh in Algiers celebrated the 55th Independence and National Day of Bangladesh on June 23, 2025, with festivity and due solemnity.

A colourful reception was held at the Hotel Sofitel in Algiers, where Dr Wassim Kouidri, Minister of the Pharmaceutical Industry of Algeria, attended as the chief guest. More than 160 guests, including senior Algerian officials, Members of Parliament, heads of diplomatic missions, civil society members, business leaders, journalists, academics, influencers and Bangladeshi expatriates, joined the event.

The programme began with the national anthems of Bangladesh and Algeria. In his speech, the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Algeria, Md Najmul Huda, paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War and the valiant freedom fighters for their sacrifices. Drawing parallels between the independence struggles of Bangladesh and Algeria, he recalled Algeria's early support for Bangladesh, especially its role in advocating for Bangladesh's accession to multilateral organisations such as the OIC.

The ambassador also remembered the martyrs of the July–August mass upsurge for democracy and social justice. Emphasising the excellent bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Algeria, he called for deepening trade, investment and economic ties between the two countries for mutual benefit.

He highlighted Bangladesh's remarkable development journey since independence, underscoring its resilience in the face of global uncertainties and natural disasters. Urging Algerian and international investors to explore Bangladesh's investment opportunities, he referred to the country's strategic location, which bridges South Asia and South-East Asia.

Ambassador Huda also spoke about the ongoing reform agenda led by the interim government under Nobel Peace Laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus, saying that Bangladesh is on track to graduate from LDC status to that of a developing country. He expressed gratitude to the global Bangladeshi expatriate community and peacekeepers serving under the United Nations.

Chief guest Dr Wassim Kouidri congratulated the people of Bangladesh and wished them continued peace and prosperity. He noted the growing ties between the two countries and called for exploring areas of cooperation that remain untapped.
The evening concluded with a grand dinner. The venue was adorned with banners, festoons and audio-visual displays, and guests enjoyed traditional and patriotic Bangladeshi music throughout the event.
