Bad news for smokers: Cigarette prices set to rise across all tiers
The minimum retail price for a pack of 10 cigarettes has been set at Tk62 for the low-tier segment, Tk92 for the medium tier, Tk160 for the high tier and Tk210 for the premium tier
Smokers may have to pay more for cigarettes from the next fiscal year, as the government has proposed increasing the minimum retail prices of all categories of cigarettes in the FY2026-27 budget.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury unveiled the proposal while presenting the Tk9.38 lakh crore national budget in parliament today (11 June).
According to the budget proposal, the minimum retail price of a 10-stick cigarette pack will increase across low, medium, high and premium segments, with the steepest hike proposed for premium brands.
The minimum retail price for low-tier cigarettes has been set at Tk62 per 10-stick pack, up from Tk60. Medium-tier cigarettes will rise from Tk80 to Tk92, while high-tier cigarettes will increase from Tk140 to Tk160 per pack.
Meanwhile, premium cigarettes will see the largest increase, with the minimum retail price of a 10-stick pack rising from Tk185 to Tk210.
In his budget speech, the finance minister said the revised prices were proposed after considering both revenue mobilisation goals and public health concerns.
