Prices of ginger, garlic and onion fall; state minister orders displaying price list in markets
The state minister said businesses must earn profits to remain viable, but consumers should not be burdened by unjustified price increases.
The supply of essential commodities remains normal, while prices of several items, including ginger, garlic and onions, have declined in recent weeks, according to traders. Consumers, however, reported a slight increase in the price of polao rice.
Speaking to reporters after visiting kitchen markets in Mohakhali and Mohammadpur today (16 June), State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Alam said the inspections were being conducted under the directives of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
During the visits, the state minister discussed supply and distribution conditions with wholesale and retail traders. He also spoke with consumers to assess the overall market situation and price trends.
"Yesterday, I visited Karwan Bazar and spoke with traders and consumers. Today, after visiting two more markets, I found that consumers are generally satisfied with the current situation," he said.
"The current government has been elected by the people's vote and remains committed to ensuring public satisfaction," he added.
The state minister said businesses must earn profits to remain viable, but consumers should not be burdened by unjustified price increases.
"Government monitoring and initiatives to protect consumers' interests will continue," he said.
According to the minister, prices of most essential commodities are stable, with traders reporting adequate supplies and recent declines in ginger, garlic and onion prices.
He also instructed traders to prominently display updated price lists to improve market transparency.
Assistant Director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection Abdul Jabbar Mondol was also present during the market visits.
Stakeholders said regular market monitoring and an uninterrupted supply chain would help maintain price stability for essential commodities.
