The Financial Institutions Division of the finance ministry issued a notification regarding the formation of the committee today
The government has formed a five-member selection committee, headed by the central bank governor, to recommend the appointment of the chief of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU).
The Financial Institutions Division of the finance ministry issued a notification regarding the formation of the committee today (25 September).
The other members of the committee are – the secretary of the Financial Institutions Division, Dr Mohammad Mohiuddin, additional secretary (drafting) of the Law and Parliamentary Affairs Division; NKA Mobin, president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB); and Dr Mosaddek Hossain Kamal, professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Dhaka.
On 9 September, the government cancelled the remaining tenure of AFM Shahinul Islam's contractual appointment as the head of the central bank's intelligence unit.
Earlier on 20 August, the Financial Institutions Division formed a four-member committee to verify the authenticity of a viral "compromising video" involving former Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) chief AFM Shahinul Islam.
Shahinul was sent on mandatory leave on 19 August.
The controversial videos of Shahinul, initially shared via WhatsApp and Messenger groups last Thursday, went viral on social media, sparking widespread criticism. The central bank's IT department has been tasked with verifying the authenticity of the videos.
In addition, allegations have emerged against him over allowing nearly Tk19 crore to be withdrawn from a frozen account of Ena Paribahan owner Khandaker Enayet Ullah.
