Govt cancels BFIU chief AFM Shahinul Islam's appointment

The government has cancelled the remaining tenure of AFM Shahinul Islam's contractual appointment as the head of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU).
The decision was made in line with Article 7 of the agreement signed with him, according to a circular issued by the finance ministry's Financial Institutions Division today (9 September).
The order also said the cancellation comes in the public interest and will take immediate effect.
Earlier on 20 August, the Financial Institutions Division formed a four-member committee to verify the authenticity of a viral "compromising video" allegedly involving Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) chief AFM Shahinul Islam.
The government had decided to take punitive action against Shahinul, who was sent on mandatory leave on 19 August.
