8 international flights diverted from Dhaka airport amid dense fog
The airlines concerned are providing necessary support, including meals and hotel accommodations, to the passengers of the delayed and diverted flights
Eight international flights scheduled to land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) were diverted to alternative airports this morning (27 December) due to low visibility caused by a thick layer of fog over the capital.
The Dhaka airport authorities confirmed that the diversions were made to ensure passenger safety as visibility dropped sharply during the early hours.
According to a press release from the airport authorities, the diverted flights were redirected to the following locations:
- 3 flights to Shah Amanat International Airport, Chattogram
- 4 flights to Kolkata airport
- 1 flight to Bangkok airport
"Flight operations will resume as normal once the weather conditions improve and visibility returns to safe levels," the release added.
The authorities noted that the airlines concerned are providing necessary support, including meals and hotel accommodations, to the passengers of the delayed and diverted flights.
The disruptions come as a cold wave continues to sweep across Dhaka and much of the country. Dense fog and biting winds have affected transport networks, particularly during the morning hours.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast dry weather with partly cloudy skies for the rest of the day.
However, it warned that moderate to dense fog is likely to persist from midnight until morning, and in some areas, it may linger until noon, potentially causing further delays in air, road, and river travel.
