Meghna and Tetulia rivers flowing beside Bhola have bulged due to the impact of the approaching cyclonic storm Bulbul. The region witnessed gusts of strong winds, coupled with drizzles of rain since Saturday afternoon.

Speaking to The Business Standard, Bhola Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam Siddiq said, "We managed to move 250,000 vulnerable people from remote char areas under seven upazilas of the district to cyclone shelters.

"People who live near the riverbanks have also been relocated to shelters."

The deputy commissioner said that a total of 323,637 people from across the district have been sent to 668 shelters and 36 educational institutions in the region. The district administration has distributed dry food to those who took refuge in the shelters.

District Cyclone Preparedness Programme has hoisted three signal flags in each of its 680 units in the region, said Deputy Director Shahabuddin Mia.

Around two to three thousand people live in the area under each unit.

"The authorities used sirens and megaphones to alert people of the coming storm and asked them to take refuge in shelters. Loudspeakers in mosques were also used to raise awareness. Dry food and khichuri has been distributed in all shelters," he added.
