During the Covid-19 pandemic, offices all of over the world are maintaining work from home policy. As employees and also employers are not habituated with the system, it has become a challenge for people from all sectors.

However, deploying a new modern workplace model is possible using this challenge. That will also increase the productivity of any organisation three folds, said Muhammad Mirsad Hossain, head of software business at Smart Technologies BD Ltd, in a virtual conference titled 'Introduction to Modern Workplace' on Sunday evening.

Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB) organised the virtual conference where Mirsad Hossain presented the keynote paper.

He said, "As per a global study, there are possibilities of increasing sales by 37% by deploying modern workplace model successfully."

Posts and Telecommunications Division minister Mustafa Jabbar joined the conference as the chief guest. Over 700 members of ICAB participated in the conference.

While presenting the keynote paper, Mirsad said that one has to stay focused while working from home. "At first you have to fix a suitable dedicated workplace somewhere in the corner of a room. Try to avoid the sofa set, the workplace will only be dedicated to working, not for other activities."

He said that schedule is one of the most important things in modern workplace model.

Mirsad described four golden rules of increasing productivity in modern workplace model. These are- staying focused while working, deep working like generating new ideas, know the uses of right tool and accepting mistakes.

"Being busy is not being productive. People have to gain the capacity to choose the right tools to get work done in a smarter way. Do not let anything to distract you from the work you are on already. If you can run 4 kilometres then run in one direction instead of running in a different direction. Same goes with official work," he added.

He said, "To get better output from modern workplace model, you have to develop a system, not a goal, as it is same for all. You can set a reward for yourself in achieving good output as there will be no authority surrounding you. This way, you can develop your work efficiency," he suggested.

Mirsad said that employers have to trust their employees and also support them by fulfilling the essential needs for working from home.

After the presentation, Akhtar Sohel Kasem, member council and previous president of ICAB, demanded to lower the price of mobile data and internet and make it more accessible as there are many marginal students.

Posts and Telecommunications Division minister Mustafa Jabbar said, "If we give free internet to the students then it will be our biggest investment. That way our future generation will be ready and I will try my best to make that happen."
