The total number of people infected with the coronavirus reached 100,000 globally on March 6. However, the number doubled in just 12 days and surpassed 200,000 on March 18.

In the last ten days, on average 709 people across the globe died from the viral infection, a significant jump from the average death toll of 132 in the period between March 1 and March 10.

The coronavirus (formally known as Covid-19), which surfaced in a Chinese seafood and poultry market in Wuhan late last year, has spread to at least 186 countries.

Till the filing of this report, the virus has killed more than 11,889 people globally and infected more than 286,607 others.

The death toll has surpassed 5,000 in Europe, with Italy, Spain and Germany reporting a steep rise in infections.

Italy announced 627 more deaths, which is so far the biggest day-on-day increase in the country's four-week epidemic on Friday – a day after surpassing China's death toll. The total number of deaths in Italy has now reached 4,032.

Compared to China's population of 1.43 billion, Italy only has 60.46 million people.

Spain's death toll has also increased to more than 1,300. There has been a 25 percent rise in the number of overall cases in the country, according to figures released on Saturday. The new total is 24,926.

It has also reported a further 2,705 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, taking the total to 16,662. There have also been 16 new coronavirus-related deaths, bringing the total to 47, according to Saturday's update.

Meanwhile in Iran, the number of deaths hit another grim milestone of 1,500 as the country marks the beginning of the Persian New Year.

The country has confirmed 966 new coronavirus cases, bringing the country's total number of cases to 20,610, health ministry spokesperson Kianush Jahanpoor announced on state television on Saturday. Over the last 24 hours, 123 people have died from the virus in Iran.

Egypt announced the closure of all mosques for two weeks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, according to the Ministry of Endowment on Saturday.

Thailand reported 89 new coronavirus cases on Friday – the country's biggest single-day jump in new cases since the pandemic began.

The World Health Organisation declared the situation a pandemic on March 11.

Most people who contract the novel coronavirus experience mild symptoms, according to data from China, where the worst of the epidemic now appears to be over. So far, around 93,500 people have recovered from the coronavirus infection globally.
