In an effort to prevent the spread of the deadly novel coronavirus, the government has placed the capital's Wari area under a lockdown for 21 days from early Saturday.

During the lockdown, all offices, schools, colleges, businesses, shops, markets and places of worships in the area will remain closed.

Only essential services such as medicine and grocery shops will remain open.

People will not be allowed to roam freely in the area for the three-week period.

Eight roads and alleys have been blocked-off by setting up bamboo barricades at the entrances from Saturday morning.

These are –Tipu Sultan Road, Jahangir Road, Dhaka-Sylhet Highway (Joykali Temple to Balda garden) and Larmini Street, Hare Street, War Street, Rankin Street and Nawab Street.

In case of an emergency, people can use Rankin Street's Uttara Bank road and another road beside the War Street's Hot Cake shop. These two streets will remain open for all.

According to locals, 200 volunteers – 50 in each shift – are working under the direction of the local councillor of the Dhaka South City Corporation to help residents in the area.

There are several super shops in the lockdown zone, and they are open under the direction of the city corporation to meet the residents' needs for various essential items.

Sub-Inspector Zahir Hossain of Wari Police Station said, "As per our instructions, doctors, nurses, journalists and those in dire need can go out under special consideration."

"We have been in a strict position since 6am. People are trying to get out, but police are trying to prevent them from doing so," he added.
