ILO expresses satisfaction with EPZs

International Labour Organization (ILO) Country Director for Bangladesh Tuomo Poutiainen has expressed his satisfaction with workers' rights and a peaceful working environment in export processing zones (EPZs) during a visit with the Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authority (Bepza).

He hopes that greater collaboration between Bepza and the ILO will further improve the competitiveness and working conditions of EPZs.

Poutiainen made the remarks during his visit with the new Executive Chairman of Bepza, Major General Md Nazrul Islam, at the Bepza Complex in the capital on Wednesday.

Md Nazrul Islam informed Poutiainen about the overall scenario of the EPZs.

Mentioning synergy between workers, management and owners, he said, "Bepza always tries to sustain a congenial working atmosphere giving the highest priority to workers' rights, welfare and safety."

He also informed the ILO Bangladesh country director about various activities undertaken by the authority to combat the pandemic – such as maintaining safety measures and social distancing to ensure a secure industrial environment.

They also discussed the Bangladesh EPZ Labour Act 2019.

Md Mahmudul Hossain Khan, member (Investment Promotion) and general manager (Enterprise Services) as well as Md Khorshid Alam from Bepza were present, among others, at the meeting.
