Women are nation's crown; their safety at home, workplace will be ensured if Jamaat wins: Shafiqur
Recalling the role of women in the July Uprising, the Jamaat chief said the courage shown by women on the streets was unforgettable
Describing women as the crown of the nation, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman today (23 January) pledged to build a Bangladesh where women can live with full safety, dignity and respect at home, on the streets and in the workplace.
"There are some miscreants who say that if Jamaat comes to power, women will be confined to homes. This is completely untrue and propaganda," he said while addressing a rally of the Jamaat-led 10-party alliance at the Gore Shahid Eidgah Maydan in Dinajpur.
"We want to ensure women receive their rightful dignity. They will contribute to nation-building with their full talent and capability, and the state and administration will guarantee their security," the Jamaat ameer added.
Recalling the role of women in the July Uprising, the Jamaat chief said the courage shown by women on the streets was unforgettable.
"Our mothers and sisters shook the foundations of oppression with their bravery. It is because of their sacrifices and courage that we can speak freely today," he said.
Referring to recent student union election results at various universities, Shafiqur claimed that young female students have demonstrated confidence in the politics of Jamaat and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir.
"They are choosing us as a platform of trust because we are committed to ensuring women's dignity and security," he added.
On regional development, he said that if Jamaat gets the opportunity to govern, Dinajpur city will be upgraded to a city corporation to ensure broader development of the greater Dinajpur region.
Highlighting the global demand for Dinajpur's mangoes and lychees, Shafiqur said his party plans to establish modern food processing industries in the area to produce juice and other processed goods for export at higher prices. This, he said, would create large-scale employment opportunities for local youth.
Calling Dinajpur the country's "granary," he noted that the greater Dinajpur region supplies nearly one-third of the nation's food.
"Despite this, the region has been neglected for decades," the Jamaat chief said, adding that Jamaat would develop northern Bangladesh into the capital of agro-industry by modernising agriculture and ensuring fair prices for farmers through the construction of crop storage facilities and cold storage units across the region.
