Woman assaulted in Dhanmondi-32 sent to jail in July attempted murder case
Police arrested Salma around 5:30pm yesterday as a suspect in a case filed over the shooting of protester Abu Saeed Md Saim during last year’s July Uprising.
A Dhaka court has ordered Salma Islam — the woman assaulted near Dhanmondi-32 yesterday for chanting "Joy Bangla" — to be sent to jail in connection with a July attempted murder case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhadra passed the order today (14 November), confirmed Sub-Inspector (SI) Anwar Mia of Dhanmondi Police Station, the investigation officer in the case.
Police arrested Salma around 5:30pm yesterday as a suspect in a case filed over the shooting of protester Abu Saeed Md Saim during last year's July Uprising.
According to the detention plea, activists of the BNP–Jamaat alliance detained the woman in front of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's residence at Dhanmondi-32 yesterday and handed her over to law enforcers.
Investigators claim preliminary evidence suggests her involvement in the July incident and that her identity and address are still being verified. Police argued that keeping her in jail is necessary for an impartial investigation.
Eyewitnesses at Dhanmondi-32 earlier said the woman was subjected to a mob beating after chanting "Joy Bangla," before being handed over to the police.
According to the case statement, on 19 July last year, protester Abu Saeed Md Saim was shot when attackers opened fire on a procession on Sat Masjid Road during the July Uprising. A bullet pierced his back and exited through his abdomen, requiring treatment at multiple hospitals.
Later a case was filed on 1 December last year, accusing Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and 37 others of attempted murder.
