'Without justice, more families like mine will become destitute': Musabbir's wife demands fair trial
Musabbir, former general secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan North Swechchhasebak Dal, was shot dead by unidentified assailants near the Bashundhara City Shopping Complex area yesterday
The wife of slain Ex-Swechchhasebak Dal leader Azizur Rahman Musabbir has demanded justice, saying more families will become destitute if those responsible for her husband's killing are not brought to trial.
Suraiya Begum made the appeal today (8 January) in front of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue while receiving her husband's body.
Recalling her last conversation with Musabbir, she told reporters, "Before leaving home in the evening, he asked me to make him a cup of coffee and said he would go out after offering prayers. That was the last time I spoke to him."
She said CCTV footage of the incident exists and urged law enforcement agencies to review the footage and arrest the perpetrators without delay.
"If this incident is not brought to justice, more families like mine will become destitute," she added.
Suraiya also said her husband had often expressed concern about threats to his life, claiming he had many enemies and feared he could be killed at any time.
Azizur Rahman Musabbir, former general secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan North Swechchhasebak Dal, affiliated wing of BNP, was shot dead by unidentified assailants near the Bashundhara City Shopping Complex area in Dhaka on 7 January.
Another man, identified as Abu Sufian, a Jubo Dal activist and general secretary of the Tejgaon Thana Van Workers' Union, sustained bullet injuries in the attack.
The shooting took place around 8:40pm behind the complex near the Tejturi Bazar area on the Kazipara-Green Road.
Confirming the incident, Fazlul Karim, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Tejgaon Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said two people were shot in an alley next to Star Kabab in Karwan Bazar.
"Musabbir died at a private hospital in Panthapath from a gunshot wound to his abdomen."
Assailants fired five rounds at Musabbir, police sources said.
CCTV footage shows two assailants sitting with a sack in an alley behind Star Kabab. As soon as they spotted Musabbir, they pulled a pistol from the sack and shot him from behind.
He collapsed to the ground, then got up and tried to flee. During the chaos, Musabbir dropped his phone, and the shooters fled with the phone.
Eyewitnesses reported that the shooting occurred in front of Karwan Bazar Star Kabab, when assailants opened fire.
