From quota reform movement to Jucsu: Who is Zitu, the newly elected VP?
"Even before being elected, I stood by the students, ignoring many challenges and obstacles. Now, I will also continue to work for the welfare of the students just as I did before," Zitu says
Abdur Rashid Zitu has been elected vice president (VP) of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (Jucsu).
Bite-Sized: Who is Jucsu's newly elected VP Zitu?
A student of the 47th batch at the university's Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture, Zitu is currently the convener of a student platform called 'Gonobhutthan Rokkhay Andolon' (Movement to Protect the Mass Uprising).
In an immediate reaction after winning the election, Zitu told the media, "I dedicate my victory to the late Assistant Professor Jannatul Ferdous of the Fine Arts Department."
"Even before being elected, I stood by the students, ignoring many challenges and obstacles. Now, I will also continue to work for the welfare of the students just as I did before, disregarding all difficulties," he added.
In the Jucsu polls, Jitu contested from the 'Swatantra Shikkharthi Sammilon' panel.
Jitu has been a visible face in student movements since the July protests, where his active participation on the streets boosted his popularity on campus.
Before joining these movements, he was reportedly involved with the Bangladesh Chhatra League. However, during the quota reform movement, he was injured in an attack by the Chhatra League.
Later, after the detention of Students Against Discrimination's (SAD) JU unit leader Arif Sohel, Zitu led the JU unit until 5 August.
He then resigned from his role as coordinator of that platform and went on to form Gonobhutthan Rokkhay Andolon, under which he has since organised and led various programmes on campus.
