Water transport workers have withdrawn their strike today following assurance from the employers to meet their demand of food allowance.

The development came following a meeting between the leaders of workers and owners this evening, Md Khorshed Alam, joint secretary of Bangladesh Water Transport Workers' Federation, told The Business Standard on Thursday.

They went on an indefinite strike from Monday midnight to press home their 11-point demand, including food allowance, health care equipment, appointment letters for the workers, and effective measures to stop extortion on the waterways.

Bangladesh Water Transport Workers' Federation and Bangladesh Lighterage Workers Union had jointly called the strike.

The goods unloading operations remained halted at outer anchorage of the Chattogram port due to the strike.
