Wages and bonuses for workers ensured ahead of Eid: Labour minister
The government has extended around Tk2,500 crore in support to ensure workers receive their wages and allowances on time, says Labour Minister Ariful Haque.
The government has ensured timely payment of wages and bonuses for workers ahead of Eid, Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque said today (19 March).
Speaking to journalists after inspecting preparations at the Sylhet Central Shahi Eidgah, he said the state has provided financial support to facilitate the smooth disbursement of workers' salaries and allowances.
"The government has extended around Tk2,500 crore in support to ensure workers receive their wages and allowances on time. Compared to previous years, workers have received their payments before Eid," he said.
He added that bonuses have also been fully disbursed, crediting the government's initiative and cooperation from elected representatives for the outcome.
This time, there has not been wage-related unrest ahead of Eid, which is a first in Bangladesh, he said.
The minister described the current administration as pro-labour, saying it is also working to support Bangladeshi migrant workers abroad, particularly amid ongoing instability in parts of the Middle East.
He noted that efforts have been underway since the early stages of the regional crisis to assist expatriates and their families.
He also warned that some individuals are exploiting the situation by coercing migrant workers and demanding money from their relatives back home.
"We have identified those involved and are alerting migrant families," he said.
The minister added that the government is working to reopen overseas labour markets and enhance workers' skills.
Language training and skill development programmes for aspiring migrant workers will be introduced next month based on demand, he added.
He also said measures are being taken to curb the activities of intermediaries who often mislead workers.
Regarding Eid travel, he said coordinated efforts by the government, administration, transport owners, and workers helped ensure smooth journeys for homebound passengers.
