A vessel carrying 52,500 metric tonnes of wheat imported by the Ministry of Food has arrived at Chattogram port from Argentina.
The vessel, MV Indigo Omega, reached the Kutubdia deep-sea anchorage around 4:15am today (13 February).
Ali Akbar, CEO of the ship's local shipping agent, Seven Seas Shipping Line, told TBS that the unloading process began after the vessel reached the Kutubdia anchorage area.
"A team led by Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Food Joynal Mollah collected wheat samples for testing. Once customs and other necessary procedures are completed, the wheat will be unloaded onto lighter vessels. It will take approximately 12 days to unload the wheat from the vessel," Ali said.
According to vessel -tracking website Marine Traffic, the Panama-flagged vessel, with a draft of 12.9 metres, departed from Necochea Port in Argentina on 9 January, carrying wheat bound for Chattogram port.
After a journey of one month and four days, the ship arrived at the Kutubdia Outer Anchorage Area this morning.
Mohammed Nasir Uddin, deputy controller of the Controller of Movement and Storage, Chattogram Office, stated that the wheat will initially be transferred to lighter vessels at the Kutubdia Outer Anchorage Area before being transported to the Food Department's silo jetty in Chattogram.
"Once the ship's draft decreases, the mother vessel will be brought to the silo jetty for unloading the remaining cargo. The wheat will then be distributed to food warehouses across the country based on demand," Nasir said.
