The United States government has informed Bangladesh about its decision to repatriate undocumented or irregular Bangladeshi citizens living in the US as part of its new immigration policy announced by President Donald Trump.
The US Embassy in Dhaka notified the Bangladesh authorities about the matter recently, officials of the home affairs ministry confirmed The Business Standard today (6 March).
To discuss the repatriation process, the home ministry held an inter-ministerial meeting yesterday (5 March), with Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury in the chair.
Officials said that there are not many Bangladeshis staying without documents in the US and that this is not a new policy targeting Bangladesh specifically.
The US has repatriated undocumented Bangladeshis in the past as well, according to officials.
Trump, following his election campaign promise, on 20 January issued an executive order for deporting undocumented immigrants.
Most undocumented migrants in the US come from Mexico and South American countries. But there are also a significant number of Indian migrants and their repatriation has already begun.
